Essentials: The Bible Isn't Just About Me It's For Me
Essentials Week 2
Small Group Discussion Guide
based on a sermon preached by Tim Bach on 11/9/25
Opening Prayer
Leader: Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of Your Word. Open our hearts and minds as we gather to understand and apply Scripture in our lives. Guide our discussion with wisdom and insight. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
Scripture Readings
1. Luke 14:25-35 - Focus on discipleship and the cost of following Jesus.
2. Matthew 10:37 - Understanding "hate" in the context of prioritizing Jesus.
Discussion Topics and Related Questions
Topic 1: Bible Reading Methods
- Question: What are some common pitfalls in reading the Bible, and how can we avoid them?
- Reference: Discuss the dangers of the "Point and Pray" method and moving directly to personal application without context.
Topic 2: Inductive Bible Study Approach
- Question: What are the steps in the inductive Bible study method, and why is each important?
- Follow-up: How does this approach prevent misunderstandings of Scripture?
Topic 3: Understanding the Cost of Discipleship
- Question: From Luke 14, what does Jesus mean by “hating” one's family and carrying the cross?
- Follow-up: How can we apply these teachings in our daily commitment to follow Christ?
Topic 4: Avoiding Self-Centered Interpretation
- Question: Why is it dangerous to make the Bible “about” us, and how can we shift our perspective to see it for us?
- Reference: Discuss the quotes from Alistair Begg and Howard G. Hendricks on interpretation.
Topic 5: The Role of Translations and Study Tools
- Question: What Bible translations and study tools do you find helpful, and why?
- Follow-up: How can comparing translations deepen our understanding of a text?
Follow-Up Exercise
Encourage each member to pick a passage of Scripture (possibly next week's sermon passage) and practice the inductive study method:
1. Observation: Write down all observations about the text.
2. Interpretation: Research the historical context and author's intent.
3. Application: Reflect on how this passage can influence your life today.
Invite members to share their findings in the next meeting.
Closing Prayer
Lord, thank You for revealing Your truth to us today. Help us to carry Your Word in our hearts and live it out daily. May our lives reflect Your love and truth. Keep us grounded in Your Word and guide us as we seek to follow You with all our hearts. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
