Daily Devo: Galatians 2
Five Day Daily Devotional: Galatians 2
Based on a sermon preached by Tim Bach, 8/9/26
Day One: Freedom Worth Defending
Opening prayer. Father, before I do anything else today, remind me that I come to you already welcomed, not on trial. Settle my heart, open your word to me, and give me honesty about what I truly believe. In Jesus' name, amen.
Scripture reading
Galatians 2:1-5.
Read it twice, slowly, the second time out loud.
Today's topic
Paul travels to Jerusalem with Barnabas and Titus and refuses, even for a moment, to let Titus be pressured into circumcision. He calls the people applying that pressure false brothers who slipped in to spy out the freedom believers have in Christ. Paul is not being stubborn or difficult. He understands that the moment we add a requirement to grace, grace stops being grace. Most of us do not face this in the form of an ancient ritual. We face it in the quiet voice that says God will be more pleased with us if we read more, serve more, perform better, or look more put together than we did last week. That voice sounds spiritual. It is actually the same threat Paul stood against.
Life application exercise
Write down the sentence that finishes this thought: I feel most acceptable to God when I . Look at what you wrote. Then write underneath it, in your own handwriting, that Christ's finished work is enough. Carry that paper with you today and reread it whenever you catch yourself keeping score.
Closing prayer
Lord, I confess how quickly I add to what you have already completed. Guard the freedom Christ bought for me, and let me hold it firmly without arrogance. Amen.
Day Two: Recognizing Grace in Someone Else
Opening prayer
Father, remove the comparison and competition from my heart before I open your word. Help me celebrate what you are doing in other people instead of measuring myself against them. Amen.
Scripture reading
Galatians 2:6-10
Today's topic
James, Cephas and John, the recognized pillars of the church, look at Paul's ministry and see the grace of God at work in it. They do not try to control it, correct it, or absorb it into their own. They extend the right hand of fellowship and send him out. Then they add one request, that he remember the poor, which Paul says he was eager to do anyway. Notice what a gospel of grace produces. It produces leaders secure enough to bless work they do not personally oversee, and it produces churches that keep the vulnerable in view. Grace that stays theoretical never reaches the poor. Grace that has actually landed in a heart always does.
Life application exercise
Today, do two things. First, contact one person whose calling or gifting is different from yours and tell them specifically what you see God doing through them. Do not add advice. Second, take one concrete action toward someone in need, a meal, money, a ride, an hour of your time. Not a plan for later this month, something today.
Closing prayer. Jesus, make me the kind of person who blesses freely and gives without being asked twice. Keep the poor and the overlooked in my line of sight, not at the edge of it. Amen.
Day Three: When Our Behavior Contradicts Our Belief
Opening prayer
Father, I do not want to hide from you this morning. Show me the places where my life says something different from what my mouth says. I would rather be corrected by you than comfortable. Amen.
Scripture reading
Galatians 2:11-14
Today's topic
Peter, who had eaten freely with Gentile believers, pulls back when certain men arrive from James. He does not change his theology. He changes his table. Paul says he acted out of fear, and that his conduct was not in step with the truth of the gospel. Even Barnabas, a genuinely good man, gets carried along. This is the sobering part. You can hold the right beliefs and still preach a false gospel with your behavior. There is a modern version of this everywhere. Consider the story of a celebrity who publicly acknowledged that her land historically belonged to an indigenous people, while that tribe noted she had never actually contacted them directly. The acknowledgment was real. The relationship was not. Christians do this constantly. We affirm the right thing publicly and keep our distance personally.
Life application exercise
Name one person or group you have quietly pulled back from, whether out of fear, discomfort, awkwardness, or concern about how it would look. Write down the fear underneath it, honestly. Then reach out today with actual contact, a text, a call, an invitation to eat together. Presence, not commentary.
Closing prayer. Lord, forgive the gap between what I say and how I live. Where fear of people has shaped my behavior more than love of you, break that hold. Give me a table that looks like your table. Amen.
Day Four: Nothing Left to Prove
Opening prayer
Father, I bring you my performance, my record, and my effort, and I set them down. Teach me today what it means to be made right by trusting Christ rather than by trying harder. Amen.
Scripture reading
Galatians 2:15-19
Today's topic
Paul lays it out plainly. A person is not justified by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ. This is not permission to live carelessly. Paul immediately rejects that idea. It is the end of an exhausting project, the project of building a case for your own worthiness. Paul says he died to the law so that he might live to God. The law was never able to give life. It could only tell him the truth about himself. Christ gave him a new life entirely. If you have spent years trying to be good enough for God, for your family, or for your church, today is an invitation to stop building and start receiving.
Life application exercise
Take ten minutes of silence with no phone. List every way you have tried to earn approval in the last week, from God and from people. Then pray through the list item by item, releasing each one, and finish by saying aloud that you are accepted in Christ and have nothing left to prove. Choose one thing on that list to deliberately not do this week.
Closing prayer. Jesus, thank you that my standing before God rests on your finished work and not on my best day. Let that truth reach the tired parts of me. Amen.
Day Five: Christ Lives in Me
Opening prayer
Father, as this week closes, do not let what I have read stay information. Make it life. Let Christ live in me in ways other people can actually see. Amen.
Scripture reading
Galatians 2:20-21.
Read it three times, and the third time read it in the first person, slowly, as your own prayer.
Today's topic
I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. Notice how personal Paul makes it. Not the Son of God who loved the world in general, but who loved me and gave himself for me. Then comes the warning in verse 21. If righteousness could come through the law, Christ died for nothing. Every time we return to self justification, we treat the cross as unnecessary. The Christian life is not you trying harder to imitate Jesus. It is Christ living his life through you, one ordinary day at a time.
Life application exercise
Look back over this week's notes. Write one paragraph answering this question: what specifically would change in the next thirty days if I truly lived as though Christ lives in me? Then pick one change from that paragraph, write it on a card, and put it where you will see it every morning. Tell one person what it is and ask them to check in with you in two weeks.
Closing prayer
Jesus, you loved me and gave yourself for me. I will not set aside your grace by trying to earn what you already gave. Live your life through mine this week, in my home, my work, my words, and my table. I no longer live, but you live in me. Amen.
