Conversations With Jesus: the Road to Emmaus
Small Group Discussion Guide
Week 11 Walking with Jesus on the Road to Emmaus
Objective:
To explore how the story of the Road to Emmaus in Luke 24:13-35 can deepen our understanding of walking with Jesus, especially during challenging times.
1. Introduction
- Icebreaker: Share a memorable experience you've had while traveling. How did the journey impact you?
- Scripture Reading: Read Luke 24:13-35 out loud as a group.
2. Understanding the Text
- Discussion Questions:
1. What were the two disciples discussing as they traveled to Emmaus?
2. Why do you think they were prevented from recognizing Jesus initially?
3. How did their perception change when Jesus broke the bread with them?
3. Connecting the Message
- Key Concepts:
- Jesus is present in our lives, even when we don't recognize Him.
- The importance of inviting Jesus to “abide” in our lives rather than just being a visitor.
- Discussion Questions:
1. In your personal journey, when have you felt like you recognized Jesus after the fact?
2. How do we sometimes miss Jesus in our daily lives, like the disciples did?
4. Applying to Life
- Reflection:
- "Delayed belief leads to delayed obedience." Reflect on a time when you hesitated in your faith journey. How did it affect your spiritual life?
- Discussion Questions:
1. What steps can you take to be more open to Jesus walking with you in difficult times?
2. How does understanding Jesus as "the way, the truth, and the life" change your approach to challenges?
5. Group Activity
- Journaling:
- Take a moment to write down any roads in life where you need Jesus to walk with you and share (if comfortable) with the group.
6. Conclusion
- Encouragement: Remind participants that Jesus seeks each one of us, desiring to walk alongside us in every situation.
- Closing Prayer:
- Invite the group to pray, asking Jesus to open their eyes and hearts to His presence in their daily walk.
7. Additional Resources
- Suggest further reading on Luke 24, and watching related sermons or commentaries about the Road to Emmaus for more insights.
This guide encourages interaction and personal reflection, making the spiritual journey relatable and encouraging personal growth within the context of community.
