5-Day Devotional: Jesus in the Old Testament*
based on sermon preached by Greg Ballog, 11./30/25

Day 1: The Promise of Redemption

- Opening Prayer:
  "Heavenly Father, thank You for Your promise of redemption that spans the entire Bible. Help us to see Jesus in every scripture we read. Amen."

- Scripture Reading:
  Genesis 3:1-15

- Daily Topic: The Protoevangelium
  - Explore how the fall of man initiated God's plan for salvation through Jesus. Reflect on the promise of victory over Satan.
 
- Life Application Exercise:
  Reflect on areas in your life where you feel tempted or deceived. Write down what steps you can take to claim victory through Jesus' promise of redemption.

- Closing Prayer:
  "Lord, thank You for the first promise of redemption offered through Jesus. Strengthen our hearts against any deception and renew our faith in Your victory. Amen."

Day 2: Jesus' Presence in Both Testaments

- Opening Prayer:
  "Father, we ask for insight to see the continuity of Your Word and the everlasting presence of Jesus. Open our eyes to the interconnections in Scripture. Amen."

- Scripture Reading:
  Romans 16:20; John 1:1-5

- Daily Topic: Jesus as the Eternal Word
  - Discuss Jesus' eternal nature and His presence both in creation and redemption history.

- Life Application Exercise:
  Choose one Old Testament and one New Testament passage and reflect on how Jesus' presence is evident in both. Journal your insights.

- Closing Prayer:
  "Thank You, Lord, for the eternal presence of Jesus in our lives. Help us to find Him in all parts of Your Word. May we live in the light of His truth. Amen."

Day 3: The Fulfillment of Prophecy

- Opening Prayer:
  "God of all truth, we give thanks for the prophecies fulfilled in Jesus. May we see Your faithfulness in every promise. Amen."

- Scripture Reading:
  Isaiah 9:6-7, Luke 1:30-33

- Daily Topic: Prophecy and Fulfillment
  - Reflect on the birth and reign of Jesus as foretold. Contemplate how these fulfilled prophecies shape our confidence in God's promises.

- Life Application Exercise:
  Research one prophecy about Jesus and its New Testament fulfillment. Share your findings with a friend or family member to encourage their faith.

- Closing Prayer:
  "Lord, thank You for Your faithfulness in fulfilling promises. Help us to trust Your word and live in hope, knowing that Your promises will always prevail. Amen."

Day 4: Jesus as Our High Priest

- Opening Prayer:
  "Gracious Father, we come before you seeking understanding of Jesus as our high priest and the ultimate sacrifice. Guide us in learning how to live in His redemption. Amen."

- Scripture Reading:
  Hebrews 9:6-12; 9:14-15

- Daily Topic: Jesus the Perfect Sacrifice
  - Examine the significance of Jesus’ sacrifice compared to the old sacrifices and priesthood.

- Life Application Exercise:
  Reflect on what it means to have Jesus as your high priest today. Write a prayer of gratitude, acknowledging His role in your life.

- *Closing Prayer:
  "Thank You, Jesus, for being the ultimate sacrifice and our high priest. Deepen our understanding of Your grace and bring us closer to living in the freedom of Your covenant. Amen."

Day 5: Jesus Is the Star of the Bible

- Opening Prayer:
  "Eternal God, help us to center our lives on Jesus, the star and focus of Your Word. Lead us to see His glory in every part of Scripture. Amen."

- Scripture Reading:
  John 3:16; Matthew 1:1-6

- Daily Topic: The Centrality of Jesus
  - Discuss how every part of the Bible points to Jesus and His role as the savior for all humanity.

- Life Application Exercise:
  Consider how you can live a life that points others to Jesus. Identify one action step you can take this week to demonstrate His love to others.

- Closing Prayer:
  "Lord Jesus, You are the heart of Scripture and life itself. Let us always see You as the central focus of our faith. Empower us to share Your story in every part of our lives. Amen."
