Daily Devo In Pursuit: God's Wrath on Jericho

Sermon Recap: This week we explored a difficult but necessary topic: the wrath of God as seen in the destruction of Jericho in Joshua 6. Far from being a story of arbitrary violence or divine overreaction, this is a story of a holy God responding in love and justice to entrenched evil. Understanding divine judgment helps us better grasp what Jesus bore for us on the cross and how much He desires fellowship with us.

7 Day Study Guide

Memory Verse:
"But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us... having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from the wrath of God through Him." Romans 5:8-9

Day 1: God’s Perfection and Love
Key Scripture: Deuteronomy 32:4, 1 John 4:8-10
  • What does it mean for God to be perfect and complete?
  • How does God’s love relate to His justice?
  • Reflect: How does knowing God is perfect and loving give you confidence even in difficult truths?
Prayer Focus: Thank God for His unchanging, self-giving love.

Day 2: God’s Holiness and Justice
Key Scripture: Isaiah 6:3, Psalm 89:14
  • What is holiness? How is God “set apart” from creation?
  • Why is it right for God to judge sin?
  • Reflect: In what areas of your life are you tolerating sin that opposes God's holiness?
Prayer Focus: Ask God to help you see sin through His eyes.

Day 3: The Canaanite Culture and God's Judgment
Key Scripture: Leviticus 18:24-30, Genesis 15:16
  • Why did God wait over 400 years before judging the Amorites?
  • What does this tell you about His patience and justice?
  • Reflect: What sins in our culture today resemble those of the Canaanites?
Prayer Focus: Intercede for cultural repentance and personal purity.

Day 4: Wrath as Love in Action
Key Scripture: Romans 1:18, Hebrews 12:6-11
  • How is wrath a necessary result of God’s love?
  • What’s the difference between passive wrath (God letting sin run its course) and active wrath (God directly intervening)?
  • Reflect: How does this make you view God’s discipline in your life?
Prayer Focus: Thank God for caring enough to discipline and correct.

Day 5: Jesus and the Wrath of God
Key Scripture: Romans 5:6-10, Isaiah 53:4-6
  • What did Jesus accomplish on the cross regarding God’s wrath?
  • Why was it necessary that Jesus absorb that wrath?
  • Reflect: How does this deepen your appreciation of salvation?
Prayer Focus: Praise Jesus for bearing the punishment we deserved.

Day 6: Your Response to God’s Offer
Key Scripture: John 3:16-18, Romans 6:23
  • What does it mean to accept or reject the work of Christ?
  • What are the consequences of each choice?
  • Reflect: Have you fully embraced the gift of salvation or are you trying to earn it?
Prayer Focus: Commit or recommit your life to Christ. Ask Him to help you walk in His truth.

Day 7: Sharing the God of Love and Justice
Key Scripture: 2 Corinthians 5:18-21
  • How do you explain the difference between genocide and divine judgment to a skeptic?
  • Why is it important to hold God’s love and justice together?
  • Reflect: Who in your life needs to hear the good news that Jesus bore the wrath of God for them?
Prayer Focus: Ask God for boldness and compassion to share the gospel.

Challenge for the Week:
Spend 10 minutes a day reflecting on how God’s holiness, love, and justice work together. Write down a prayer or journal entry each day thanking God for what Jesus saved you from.
Let this week reshape how you view God—not as a distant judge or a lenient parent, but as a perfect Father who loves enough to deal with evil and rescue you through His Son.
