A Really Cool Blessing

Small Group Discussion Guide
based on a sermon preached by Tim Bach & Greg Ballog, 12/24/25

Opening Prayer: Begin with a prayer inviting God's presence, thanking Him for His blessings, and asking for understanding and insight as the group discusses Jesus as the ultimate blessing.

Scripture Readings: Assign different members to read aloud the following scriptures: Luke 2:10-11, John 1:1, 14, John 1:5, and Ephesians 1:3. These passages focus on the birth of Jesus, His identity as the Word made flesh, and the spiritual blessings we receive in Him.

Discussion Topics and Related Questions:

  1. The Unexpected Arrival: Discuss why God chose to send Jesus as a baby in a manger rather than as a king or warrior. How does this humble beginning relate to our daily lives? What does it teach us about God’s ways?
  2. Jesus as the Ultimate Blessing: Reflect on the idea of Jesus being the blessing all of history waited for. How does this understanding deepen our appreciation of Christmas? Why is Jesus considered the ultimate blessing?
  3. Spiritual Blessings in Christ: Look at the blessings listed in the sermon—Forgiveness, Peace, Hope, and Eternal Life. How have you experienced these blessings personally? Which of these resonates most with you right now and why?
  4. Real Light in the Darkness: Consider John 1:5’s message about Jesus being the light. How does knowing Jesus as the light affect your view of the world’s darkness? Can you share a personal story where you have experienced this light?
  5. Living Blessed: Discuss practical ways to live out the call to receive His love, reflect His life, and share His light. What are some challenges in doing this, and how can the group support each other?
Follow-Up Exercise: Encourage group members to engage in a daily reflection during the week focused on recognizing Jesus as a present and active blessing in their lives. They can journal about one way they see the blessing of Jesus each day and plan a simple action to share His love with someone.

Closing Prayer: Conclude with a prayer of gratitude for Jesus, committing to living in His blessing. Ask for guidance in making His love and light evident in each group member's life throughout the coming week. Pray for the courage and wisdom to share Jesus’ blessings with others.
