Timeless X: Ten Commandments Week 6
THE 6TH COMMANDMENT
Based on sermon preached by Greg Ballog, 10/25/26
Small Group Discussion Guide
Theme: Murder starts in the heart long before it reaches the hands. God calls us to bring our anger to Him, guard our words, make things right with people quickly, and love our neighbor as ourselves.
OPENING PRAYER (5 minutes)
Heavenly Father, thank You for bringing us together. You are the giver of life, and every person we meet is made in Your image. As we open Your Word, search our hearts. Show us any anger, bitterness, or broken relationship we have been holding on to. Give us honest hearts to share, humble ears to listen, and the courage to obey what You show us. We invite Your Holy Spirit to lead this time. In Jesus' name, Amen.
SCRIPTURE READINGS
Have different group members read each passage aloud.
Reading 1: Exodus 20:13
"Do not murder."
Reading 2: Genesis 4:1-10
The story of Cain and Abel, where God warns Cain that sin is crouching at the door, Cain kills his brother, and God asks, "Where is your brother Abel?"
Reading 3: Matthew 5:21-25
Jesus teaches that anger and insults toward a brother or sister are subject to judgment, and that we should leave our gift at the altar and first be reconciled.
Reading 4: Mark 12:28-31, 34
Jesus names the greatest commandments: love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength, and love your neighbor as yourself.
Reading 5: Genesis 4:23-24
Lamech boasts that he killed a man for wounding him, showing how Cain's sin was repeated and multiplied in the next generations.
Reading 6: James 5:15-16
"Confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is very powerful in its effect."
DISCUSSION TOPICS AND QUESTIONS
Topic 1: Sin Crouching at the Door
Key thought: "The cure for emotional problems is found in spiritual realignment."
Before Cain ever lifted his hand against Abel, God came to him and asked, "Why are you furious? And why do you look despondent?" God saw the problem in Cain's heart and gave him a chance to deal with it.
Topic 2: It Starts on the Inside (about 8 minutes)
Key thought: "Every external sin starts with an internal emotion not given to God."
Cain's anger and jealousy grew quietly until it became an action. When God asked where Abel was, Cain answered, "Am I my brother's guardian?"
Topic 3: Jesus Raises the Standard
In Matthew 5, Jesus says the commandment is not only about physical murder. Anger, insults, and contempt toward others are matters of the heart that God takes seriously.
Topic 4: Relationship Before Religion
Key thought: "You cannot out-religion a relationship that needs to be restored."
Jesus says if you remember someone has something against you, leave your gift at the altar and go be reconciled first. He also says to settle matters quickly.
Topic 5: Our Sin or Obedience Is Duplicated
Key thought: "Our sin or obedience is always duplicated."
A few generations after Cain, Lamech brags about killing a man and claims he should be avenged seventy-seven times. Sin left alone does not stay small; it spreads to the people who come after us. But obedience is passed on too. Jesus gives us the better way: love God fully and love our neighbor as ourselves.
FOLLOW UP EXERCISE
Heart Check and Reconciliation Step
Give each person a few quiet minutes to answer these questions privately on paper or on their phone:
CLOSING PRAYER
Lord, You are the author of life, and You have called us to honor every life You have made. Forgive us for the anger we have held, the words we have spoken carelessly, and the relationships we have left broken. Help us bring our emotions to You before they turn into sin. Give us courage to go and be reconciled, humility to confess, and grace to forgive. Help us love You with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength, and love our neighbors as ourselves. May our obedience be passed on to our families and to everyone who watches our lives. Heal us as we pray for one another this week. In Jesus' name, Amen.
THE 6TH COMMANDMENT
5 Day Daily Devotional
DAY 1: SIN IS CROUCHING AT THE DOOR
Opening Prayer
Father, as I begin this day, I open my heart to You. Show me what is really going on inside me. I do not want to hide my feelings from You. Speak to me through Your Word today. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Scripture Reading
Genesis 4:1-7
Daily Topic
Cain was furious and despondent when God did not accept his offering. Before anything terrible happened, God came to Cain with a question: "Why are you furious? And why do you look despondent?" God warned him that sin was crouching at the door, wanting to control him, but that he must rule over it. God does not ignore our emotions. He invites us to bring them to Him. The cure for emotional problems is found in spiritual realignment. When our relationship with God is out of line, our emotions often follow. When we get right with Him, we find the strength to rule over what is trying to rule us.
Life Application Follow Up Exercise
Take five minutes and imagine God asking you the same question He asked Cain: "Why are you upset?" Write down an honest answer. Then write one sentence giving that feeling to God. Throughout the day, when that feeling comes back, pause and say, "Lord, I give this to You."
Closing Prayer
Lord, thank You for caring about what is happening in my heart. Help me recognize sin crouching at my door and give me strength to rule over it. Realign my heart with Yours today. In Jesus' name, Amen.
DAY 2: IT STARTS ON THE INSIDE
Opening Prayer
God, You see what no one else sees. Search my heart today and reveal anything I have been holding on to that is not from You. Make me willing to change. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Scripture Reading
Genesis 4:8-10
Daily Topic
Cain did not wake up one day and suddenly decide to kill his brother. His anger grew quietly on the inside until it became an action on the outside. Every external sin starts with an internal emotion not given to God. When God asked Cain where his brother was, Cain answered, "Am I my brother's guardian?" Sin not only hurt Abel; it hardened Cain's heart toward the people God had placed in his life. God still says, "Your brother's blood cries out to me." Every person matters to Him, and He calls us to care for the people around us.
Life Application Follow Up Exercise
Think about a recent time you said or did something you regret. Trace it backward. What feeling was underneath it, such as jealousy, hurt, stress, or pride? Write it down and ask God to help you catch that feeling sooner next time. Then choose one person you can look out for today, and do one kind thing for them.
Closing Prayer
Father, help me deal with my heart before it turns into harmful words or actions. Make me a guardian for the people You have placed around me. Let my life show love, not neglect. In Jesus' name, Amen.
DAY 3: THE POWER OF ANGER AND WORDS
Opening Prayer
Lord Jesus, You speak truth with love. Open my eyes today to how my anger and my words affect others. Guard my mouth and soften my heart. In Your name, Amen.
Scripture Reading
Matthew 5:21-22
Daily Topic
Most of us would never think of ourselves as breaking the sixth commandment. But Jesus takes it deeper. He says that anger toward a brother or sister, insults, and calling someone a fool are also serious in God's eyes. Jesus is showing us that murder begins long before a life is taken. It begins with contempt, with treating people as less than the image-bearers of God that they are. Our words can wound, tear down, and destroy. God calls us to speak in ways that build life, not take it away.
Life Application Follow Up Exercise
Today, pay close attention to your words, both spoken and typed, including texts, emails, and social media. Each time you notice a harsh, sarcastic, or belittling thought about someone, stop and replace it with a short prayer for that person. At the end of the day, write down what you noticed and how it changed your attitude.
Closing Prayer
Lord, forgive me for the times I have let anger linger and words wound. Set a guard over my mouth. Help me see every person the way You see them, as someone You made and someone You love. In Jesus' name, Amen.
DAY 4: RELATIONSHIP BEFORE RELIGION
Opening Prayer
God of peace, You have reconciled me to Yourself through Jesus. Give me the courage to pursue peace with others. Show me any relationship that needs Your healing. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Scripture Reading
Matthew 5:23-25
Daily Topic
Jesus says that if you are bringing your gift to the altar and remember that someone has something against you, leave your gift and go make it right first. You cannot out-religion a relationship that needs to be restored. God is not impressed by worship that ignores broken relationships. Jesus also tells us to reach a settlement quickly. Conflict left alone does not fade; it grows. Reconciliation is not always easy, and we cannot control how others respond, but God calls us to take the first step and do our part.
Life Application Follow Up Exercise
Ask God to bring to mind one person you need to reconcile with. Write their name down. Decide on one step you will take within the next 48 hours: a phone call, a text, an apology, an offer of forgiveness, or simply praying for them by name every day this week. If reaching out is not safe or wise, ask a trusted friend or pastor to help you decide what peace looks like in that situation.
Closing Prayer
Lord, I do not want my worship to cover up broken relationships. Give me humility to apologize, grace to forgive, and courage to act quickly. Bring healing where there has been hurt. In Jesus' name, Amen.
DAY 5: LOVE THAT IS PASSED ON
Opening Prayer
Father, You have shown me what real love looks like. Fill me with Your love today so that it overflows to everyone around me and to those who come after me. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Scripture Reading
Mark 12:28-31, 34; Genesis 4:23-24; James 5:15-16
Daily Topic
A few generations after Cain, his descendant Lamech bragged about killing a man and demanded revenge seventy-seven times over. Cain's sin did not stay with Cain; it was passed on and multiplied. Our sin or obedience is always duplicated. The good news is that obedience is passed on too. Jesus gives us the better way: love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength, and love your neighbor as yourself. At its heart, the sixth commandment is about loving others enough to protect and honor their lives. James reminds us that when we confess our sins to one another and pray for one another, we find healing. We do not have to break old patterns alone.
Life Application Follow Up Exercise
Write down one unhealthy pattern you have seen in your family or your own life when it comes to anger or conflict. Next to it, write the godly pattern you want to pass on instead. Then share this with one trusted believer this week, confess where you have struggled, and ask them to pray with you. Finally, write a short prayer for the people who are watching your life, such as children, family, friends, or coworkers.
Closing Prayer
Lord, let the patterns I pass on be patterns of love, forgiveness, and obedience. Help me love You with everything I am and love my neighbor as myself. Thank You for the healing that comes when we confess and pray for one another. Make my life a blessing to the generations after me. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Note: The sermon file lists the Lamech passage as Genesis 4:22-23, but the verses quoted are Genesis 4:23-24, so I used 4:23-24 in both resources.

- Why do you think God asked Cain questions instead of simply telling him what to do?
- God said sin's desire was for Cain, "but you must rule over it." What does it look like in everyday life to rule over a strong emotion instead of letting it rule you?
- Cain's real problem was not his brother but his relationship with God. How can feeling distant from God show up as frustration with other people?
- What helps you realign with God when your emotions start to take over?
Topic 2: It Starts on the Inside (about 8 minutes)
Key thought: "Every external sin starts with an internal emotion not given to God."
Cain's anger and jealousy grew quietly until it became an action. When God asked where Abel was, Cain answered, "Am I my brother's guardian?"
- Think about the steps from Cain's anger to Cain's action. Where could he have stopped it?
- What emotions are most likely to grow into sinful words or actions if we do not give them to God? (Examples: jealousy, resentment, hurt, comparison, disappointment.)
- Cain asked, "Am I my brother's guardian?" In what ways does God call us to look out for the people around us?
- Share, if you are comfortable, a time when you realized something on the inside was affecting how you treated someone.
Topic 3: Jesus Raises the Standard
In Matthew 5, Jesus says the commandment is not only about physical murder. Anger, insults, and contempt toward others are matters of the heart that God takes seriously.
- Why do you think Jesus connects anger and insulting words to murder?
- How can words do real damage to a person's life, heart, or reputation?
- Where do we see contempt and name-calling in our culture today, such as on social media, in politics, at work, or at home?
- What is the difference between feeling angry and holding on to anger?
Topic 4: Relationship Before Religion
Key thought: "You cannot out-religion a relationship that needs to be restored."
Jesus says if you remember someone has something against you, leave your gift at the altar and go be reconciled first. He also says to settle matters quickly.
- Why does Jesus put reconciliation ahead of worship?
- Why is it tempting to keep doing religious activities while avoiding a broken relationship?
- Why does Jesus stress acting quickly? What happens when conflict is left alone too long?
- What makes reconciliation hard, and what can make it easier?
Topic 5: Our Sin or Obedience Is Duplicated
Key thought: "Our sin or obedience is always duplicated."
A few generations after Cain, Lamech brags about killing a man and claims he should be avenged seventy-seven times. Sin left alone does not stay small; it spreads to the people who come after us. But obedience is passed on too. Jesus gives us the better way: love God fully and love our neighbor as ourselves.
- How have you seen patterns, good or bad, passed down in families, friendships, or workplaces?
- Who is watching how you handle anger and conflict?
- What is one pattern of obedience you want to pass on to the next generation?
- James tells us to confess our sins to one another and pray for one another so we may be healed. Why is confession in community so powerful?
FOLLOW UP EXERCISE
Heart Check and Reconciliation Step
Give each person a few quiet minutes to answer these questions privately on paper or on their phone:
- Is there an emotion I have not given to God, such as anger, jealousy, hurt, or resentment? Name it.
- Is there anyone who has something against me, or whom I am holding something against?
- What is one step I can take this week to make it right? (Examples: pray for that person by name every day, send a text or make a call, apologize, offer forgiveness, or ask a trusted friend for help.)
