Psalm 119: Small Group Discussion Guide

Small Group Discussion Guide: Living in God's Word, A Study on Psalm 119
Total Time: 1 Hour

Opening Prayer, 5 minutes
Lord, thank You for bringing us together tonight. As we open Your word, open our hearts to receive it, not just as information, but as truth that changes how we live. Help us to be honest with one another, to listen well, and to walk away tonight more committed to knowing and living Your word. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Scripture Readings, 10 minutes
Have a few different group members read the following passages aloud.
Psalm 119:1-8
Psalm 119:105
Psalm 119:89-90
John 8:31-32

Introduction, 5 minutes
Psalm 119 is the longest chapter in the Bible, and it is entirely devoted to celebrating God's word. Throughout the psalm, God's word is described as a lamp, a counselor, a source of life, a foundation that stands forever, and the very thing that produces true happiness when it is followed with a whole heart. Tonight we are going to look at four ways scripture describes God's word, our guide, our truth, our forever foundation, and our life, and then ask ourselves the question the source material for this study poses directly, do we simply own a Bible, or do we actually live it.

Discussion Topic One, God's Word Is Our Guide, 8 minutes
Read again Psalm 119:105 and Psalm 119:59-60.

Question 1, Psalm 119:105 says God's word is a lamp for our feet and a light on our path, not a floodlight for the whole journey. Why do you think God often gives us just enough light for the next step rather than showing us the entire road ahead?

Question 2, Verse 59 describes someone who thought about their ways and turned back toward God's decrees. When was the last time you paused to examine your own direction and realized you needed to turn back toward what scripture says?

Question 3, Where in your life right now are you tempted to seek guidance from other sources, like social media, popular opinion, or your own feelings, before you go to God's word? What would it look like to go to scripture first instead of last?

Discussion Topic Two, God's Word Is True, 8 minutes
Read again Psalm 119:42-43 and Galatians 6:6-7, 11-12.

Question 1, The psalmist says he can answer his critics because he trusts in God's word. What are some situations in your own life where holding onto biblical truth has helped you respond to criticism or doubt with confidence rather than fear?

Question 2, Galatians warns believers about how quickly people can turn from the true gospel toward a distorted one. What are some of the subtle ways truth gets distorted in our culture today, and how do we guard against drifting without even realizing it?

Discussion Topic Three, God's Word Is Forever, 7 minutes
Read again Psalm 119:89-90.

Question 1, The psalmist connects God's eternal word directly to God's faithfulness across every generation. Share a time when you experienced God's faithfulness in a way that reminded you His promises do not expire.

Question 2, What is something in your life right now that feels unstable or shaky? How does knowing God's word is firmly fixed change the way you can face that situation this week?

Discussion Topic Four, God's Word Is Life, 7 minutes
Read again Psalm 119:25, 40 and John 8:31-32.

Question 1, The psalmist admits his life felt down in the dust, yet he asked for life through God's word rather than giving up. Is there an area of your life right now that feels worn down or discouraged? What would it look like to bring that specific area to God's word this week?

Question 2, Jesus says that continuing in His word is what makes someone truly free. How would you explain to someone else why obedience to scripture leads to freedom rather than restriction?

Life Application Follow Up Exercise, 8 minutes
Ask each person in the group to reflect quietly for a minute, then share with the group.
Look back at the four themes discussed tonight, guide, truth, forever, and life. Which one do you personally need most this week, and why?

Choose one specific, practical step you will take before the group meets again. Examples include memorizing one verse from tonight's readings, setting a consistent daily reading time, having an honest conversation with someone about an area where you have compromised truth, or writing down one unstable situation and pairing it with a promise from God's word.

Pair up with one other person in the group and share your commitment with them. Exchange contact information if needed and agree to check in with each other before the next meeting.

Closing Discussion Question, 2 minutes
The source material behind tonight's study ends with a direct challenge, do you live the Bible, or do you just settle for owning one? As a final thought before we pray, what is one honest answer you would give to that question tonight?

Closing Prayer, 5 minutes
Father, thank You for the truth we have uncovered together tonight in Your word. Thank You that Your word guides us, tells us what is true, stands forever, and gives us life when we feel worn down. Help each person here move from simply owning a Bible to truly living it out this week. Strengthen the commitments made tonight, and bring us back together stronger in our faith and more devoted to walking in Your ways. In Jesus' name, Amen.
