Daily Devo: Do Not Steal
FIVE DAY DEVOTIONAL
Thou Shalt Not Steal: Don't Steal, Work Hard, Be Generous
Key Verse: "Let the thief no longer steal, but rather let him labor, doing honest work with his own hands, so that he may have something to share with anyone in need." Ephesians 4:28
DAY 1
Topic: What It Really Means to Steal
Opening Prayer
Father, as I begin this week, open my heart to Your Word. Show me what You mean when You say, "You shall not steal." Search me and help me see myself honestly. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Scripture Reading
Exodus 20:15
"You shall not steal."
Romans 13:9
"For this, 'You shall not commit adultery, you shall not murder, you shall not steal, you shall not covet,' and if there is any other commandment, it is summed up in this saying, 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.'"
Daily Topic
The Hebrew word for steal is ganab. It means to thieve, to deceive, to carry away, or to get by stealth. Simply put, stealing is gaining something at someone else's expense. Most of us would never rob a store, but stealing can be quiet and subtle. We can steal time from an employer, credit from a coworker, honesty from a conversation, or effort from a commitment. Paul tells us that every commandment is summed up in loving our neighbor as ourselves. That means stealing is never just about things. It is a failure to love. When we take from someone else for our own gain, we place ourselves above them. God calls us to a better way, one where we look out for the good of others instead of our own advantage.
Life Application Follow Up Exercise
Take a few minutes and write down the different ways a person can gain something at someone else's expense. Then honestly ask God if any of them are present in your life. Circle one area you want God to help you change this week.
Closing Prayer
Lord, thank You for showing me that this commandment is about love. Help me to see others as You see them and never to gain at their expense. Give me a heart that seeks the good of my neighbor. In Jesus' name, Amen.
DAY 2
Topic: Why We Steal
Opening Prayer
Heavenly Father, I want to understand the roots of my heart, not just my actions. Reveal anything in me that does not trust You. Lead me in Your truth today. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Scripture Reading
Proverbs 10:2
"Ill-gotten gains do not profit, but righteousness delivers from death."
Daily Topic
Why do we steal? There are three roots underneath it all. First, a lack of trust in God. When we don't believe God will provide, we take matters into our own hands. Second, selfishness and pride. We believe we deserve more or that our needs matter more than someone else's. Third, sin and greed. Our fallen nature always wants more. In the United States, retail theft totals about 112 billion dollars a year, and employee theft accounts for around 30 percent of that. These numbers remind us that the struggle is real and widespread. But Proverbs reminds us that ill-gotten gains do not profit. What we take dishonestly never satisfies, and it often costs more than it was worth. And remember, how you handle the little thing is how you'll handle everything. Faithfulness in small matters shapes the kind of person we become.
Life Application Follow Up Exercise
Reflect on the three roots: lack of trust in God, selfishness and pride, and sin and greed. Which one shows up most in your life, even in small ways? Write it down. Then identify one small, everyday area where you can practice faithfulness this week, such as returning extra change, arriving on time, or being honest in a small detail.
Closing Prayer
Lord, I confess that sometimes I don't trust You to provide. Forgive me for selfishness, pride, and greed. Help me to be faithful in the little things so that I can be faithful in everything. In Jesus' name, Amen.
DAY 3
Topic: The Way Out: Be Honest and Trust God's Provision
Opening Prayer
Father, thank You that You don't leave me stuck in my sin. Thank You for the power of Jesus to transform me. Today, show me the path to freedom and honesty. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Scripture Reading
Ephesians 4:28
"Let the thief no longer steal, but rather let him labor, doing honest work with his own hands, so that he may have something to share with anyone in need."
Daily Topic
God doesn't just tell us what not to do. He shows us the way forward. The message gave five steps for overcoming the temptation to steal. We recognize the sinful nature. We repent of selfishness. We do life in true Christian community. We are transformed by Jesus. And we trust the provision of God. Notice that change doesn't come from willpower alone. It comes from honesty about our sin, turning away from it, surrounding ourselves with believers who help us, and allowing Jesus to change our hearts. The final step is key. When we truly trust that God will provide, the pressure to take what isn't ours begins to fade. A heart at rest in God's provision has no need to grab.
Life Application Follow Up Exercise
Pick one of the five steps that you most need right now. If it is repentance, spend time in confession. If it is community, reach out to a trusted believer and ask them to pray with you. If it is trusting God's provision, write down three ways God has provided for you in the past and thank Him for each one. If you need to make something right with someone, take that step today.
Closing Prayer
Jesus, thank You for transforming me. I repent of selfishness and choose to trust You as my Provider. Surround me with people who will help me walk in honesty. Make me new. In Jesus' name, Amen.
DAY 4
Topic: Work Hard as for the Lord
Opening Prayer
Lord, thank You for the gift of work and for the abilities You have given me. Help me to see my work today as an act of worship. Give me strength and a willing heart. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Scripture Reading
Colossians 3:23
"Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men."
Ephesians 4:28
"...but rather let him labor, doing honest work with his own hands..."
Daily Topic
Paul's answer to stealing is not just to stop. It is to start working. God replaces a habit of taking with a habit of producing. Someone once said, "It's easier to find talent than work ethic." Talent is a gift, but work ethic is a choice. When we work heartily, as for the Lord, our job, our chores, and our service all become acts of worship. Our work matters to God, no matter how ordinary it seems. And there is a purpose behind our work that goes beyond earning a living. We work so we can be generous. A paycheck is not only for us. It is a tool God places in our hands to bless others and to build His Kingdom.
Life Application Follow Up Exercise
Choose one task today, at work, at home, or in ministry, and do it with excellence as if Jesus Himself were your boss. Before you begin, pray and dedicate it to Him. At the end of the day, reflect on how your attitude changed. Also ask yourself whether there are any areas where you have been giving less than your best, and make a plan to change.
Closing Prayer
Father, thank You for the work You have given me. Forgive me for the times I have been lazy or halfhearted. Help me to work heartily for You and to remember that I work so I can be generous. In Jesus' name, Amen.
DAY 5
Topic: Be Generous: Don't Rob God
Opening Prayer
Generous God, You have given me everything, including Your Son. Open my hands and my heart today. Teach me to give the way You give, joyfully and freely. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Scripture Reading
Malachi 3:8-10
"Will a man rob God? Yet you have robbed Me. But you say, 'In what way have we robbed You?' In tithes and offerings. You are cursed with a curse, for you have robbed Me, even this whole nation. Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, so that there may be food in My house, and test Me now in this," says the Lord of hosts, "if I will not open for you the windows of heaven and pour out for you a blessing until it overflows."
2 Corinthians 9:6-8
"Now this I say, he who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each one must do just as he has purposed in his heart, not grudgingly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that always having all sufficiency in everything, you may have an abundance for every good deed."
Proverbs 3:9-10
"Honor the Lord from your wealth and from the first of all your produce; so your barns will be filled with plenty and your vats will overflow with new wine."
Luke 6:38
"Give, and it will be given to you. They will pour into your lap a good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over. For by your standard of measure it will be measured to you in return."
Daily Topic
If we won't work hard and be generous, God suggests we are stealing from Him. Malachi asks a hard question: "Will a man rob God?" Withholding generosity is a biblical definition of robbing God. The average Christian gives about 2.6 percent of household income, down from 3.2 percent in 2021. Yet in Malachi 3:10, God offers a rare invitation: "Test Me in this." A.W. Tozer said, "What we hold loosely, God multiplies eternally." Charles Spurgeon said, "You cannot outgive God." Generosity is the overflow of a heart transformed by grace. It is a joyful action, not an amount. God loves a cheerful giver. Proverbs tells us to honor the Lord with the first, not the leftovers. One practical way to do that is to give before paying the first bill of the month. We are Kingdom Builders, not Wealth Builders, and our generosity has eternal impact. Generosity equals souls, because our giving helps others come to know Jesus.
Life Application Follow Up Exercise
Sit down with your budget this week. Before you pay your first bill of the month, decide what you will give to God first, and make that gift your top priority. Then ask God to show you one person in need this week, and meet that need with your time, resources, or encouragement. Write down what you are holding too tightly and surrender it to God in prayer.
Closing Prayer
Lord, forgive me for the times I have held back from You. I want to be a cheerful giver. I choose to honor You with my first and to trust that You cannot be outgiven. Make me a Kingdom Builder, not a Wealth Builder. Let my generosity overflow so others may come to know You. Thank You for being so generous to me. In Jesus' name, Amen.
