Psalms for Every Occassion: Psalm 147
Small Group Discussion Guide based on a sermon by Tim Bach, 7/19/26
Opening prayer
Lord, we thank You for the privilege of gathering together around Your Word. We ask that You quiet our hearts, open our minds, and help us to see You more clearly as we talk and listen tonight. Teach us what it means to remember Your goodness and to praise You with our whole lives. Guide our conversation, deepen our love for You and for one another, and lead us by Your Spirit. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Scripture readings
Read Psalm 147:1–11 slowly. Invite different people to read a few verses each. After reading, pause for a moment of silent reflection.
Read Psalm 147:12–20. Again, invite several people to read. Ask the group to listen for repeated themes or words about God’s character and His actions.
Optional supporting passages (read as time allows): Psalm 103:1–5, Philippians 4:4–7, and Colossians 3:15–17. These passages reinforce themes of remembering, gratitude, and praise.
Transition to discussion
Explain that Psalm 147 is a psalm of praise that calls God’s people to remember who God is and what He has done. It reminds us that praise is both a privilege and a response to God’s faithful character. Tonight’s discussion will focus on how we remember God’s works, how praise shapes our hearts, and how we can live out these truths in everyday life.[1]
Discussion topic 1: The privilege of praise
In your own words, what does it mean that praising God is a “privilege” and not just a duty or obligation
When you think about your week, what are some moments when praise to God came naturally What helped it come so easily
Are there areas of your life where praise feels forced or distant What tends to get in the way of praising God in those areas
How might seeing praise as a response to God’s character (who He is) rather than just our circumstances change the way you worship Him
Discussion topic 2: Remembering God’s works
Psalm 147 points God’s people back to His past faithfulness. Why do you think remembering is such a big theme in Scripture
Think of a time when God clearly provided, protected, comforted, or guided you. What happened, and how did you see His hand in it
How does remembering specific examples of God’s faithfulness affect your trust in Him today
What are some practical ways you can build rhythms of remembering into your routine (examples could include journaling, sharing testimonies, setting reminders, regular prayer times)
Discussion topic 3: God’s care for both the big and the small
Psalm 147 praises God for big acts (like His care for His people as a whole) and for small details (like providing for creation). How have you seen God care for both the big and the small in your life
Are there “small” needs you hesitate to bring to God Why or why not
How might it change your prayer life if you believed deeply that God is both powerful enough for the big things and tender enough to care about small details
What is one current situation where you need to trust God’s care more fully What would that trust look like this week
Discussion topic 4: Praise in community
Psalm 147 is written to a community, not just an individual. Why is it important for us to praise God together, not only on our own
How has hearing someone else’s story of God’s faithfulness encouraged you or strengthened your faith
In what ways can our group become more intentional about sharing and celebrating answered prayers and God’s work among us
What might God be inviting this group to do differently so that praise becomes a more regular part of our life together
Follow up exercise (for during the week)
Remembering list
Sometime in the next day or two, set aside 10–15 minutes to create a simple “remembering list.” Write down at least five specific ways God has been faithful to you in the past year. These can be big or small. Keep this list where you will see it regularly (on your phone, in your Bible, on your mirror). Each time you see it, pause and thank God for one item on the list.
Praise in prayer
Choose one short portion of Psalm 147 to pray each day this week. Turn the words into your own prayer. For example, if the psalm speaks of God’s care, you might say, “Lord, thank You that You care for me in this situation with my family or work. Help me trust You here.”
Sharing with someone
Before next week, look for an opportunity to share one specific way God has been faithful to you with a friend, family member, or someone in your church. It can be a short, simple story, but let it be a way of giving praise to God and encouraging another person.
Group wrap up question (final 5–10 minutes)
As we close, what is one truth about God from Psalm 147 that you want to carry with you into this week How do you hope it will shape your attitude, decisions, or prayers
Closing prayer
Lord, we thank You for meeting with us through Your Word and by Your Spirit. Thank You for the reminders of Your faithfulness, Your care, and Your greatness. Help us to remember Your works and to respond with sincere praise in both the big and small moments of our lives. Strengthen our faith, unite us as a community that points one another back to You, and give us opportunities this week to share Your goodness with others. We entrust ourselves, our families, our church, and our community to You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
