Lord, we come together tonight in a world full of competing voices, all claiming to speak truth. Quiet our hearts and sharpen our discernment. Help us to hold fast to the true gospel of Jesus Christ, and give us the courage to examine our own hearts honestly tonight. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Scripture Readings, 8 minutes
Have different group members read the following passages aloud.
Galatians 1:6-9, I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting the one who called you to live in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel, which is really no gospel at all. Evidently some people are throwing you into confusion and trying to pervert the gospel of Christ. But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let them be under God's curse.

Introduction, 3 minutes
Paul wrote Galatians because believers were being pulled away from the true gospel toward something that looked similar but was actually a distortion. That same danger exists today, sometimes through obvious false teaching, and sometimes through subtle cultural pressures that slowly erode genuine faith without anyone noticing. Tonight we are going to look at some of those modern pressures, some historical examples of how man's authority can creep in and compete with scripture's authority, and the simple, unchanging truth that our faith is not built on a system or a practice, it is built on a person, Jesus Christ.

Discussion Topic One, Modern Threats to Genuine Faith, 7 minutes

Question 1, Our culture often rewards tribalism over truth, where algorithms and engagement push us toward whichever voices agree with us rather than whichever voices are actually correct. Where have you noticed this happening in your own information diet, whether on social media, news, or even within Christian content?

Question 2, Spectator faith describes people who observe theology and discuss it intellectually without ever letting it change how they live. Deconstruction pipelines describe content deliberately designed to erode someone's faith piece by piece. Have you seen either of these show up in your own life or in someone close to you? What did that look like?

Question 3, Hebrews 13:17 calls us to submit to and obey spiritual leaders who watch over our souls, yet avoiding correction is listed as one of the dangers to genuine faith. Why do you think it has become so easy for people to avoid correction from pastors or mature believers today, and what makes someone actually willing to receive it?

Discussion Topic Two, False Gospels That Feel True, 7 minutes

Question 1, The prosperity gospel, the moralistic gospel, the progressive gospel, and the self-help gospel are all mentioned as dangerous because they feel so similar to the real gospel. In your own words, how would you describe the core difference between one of these counterfeit gospels and the actual gospel of Jesus Christ?

Question 2, 1 Corinthians 8:1 says knowledge makes us arrogant, but love builds up. How can pursuing biblical knowledge without love actually push people toward pride, suspicion, or a feeling that we see what others do not see?

Question 3, Anxiety happens when fear replaces trust in God, and suspicion happens when we start assuming everyone might be a deceiver. Have you experienced either of these in your own walk with God recently? What helped you, or what could help you, return to trust instead of fear?

Discussion Topic Three, When Man's Authority Competes With Scripture, 7 minutes

Question 1, Galatians 2:11 shows Paul directly opposing Peter to his face because Peter was in the wrong, even though Peter held a position of high authority in the early church. Why is it significant that scripture shows even the most respected leaders being corrected rather than treated as beyond question?

Question 2, The material we read tonight points to examples like extra biblical traditions being treated as equal to scripture, and human leaders or practices gaining excessive authority over time. Without pointing fingers at any one group, what practical safeguards can we put in place in our own lives so tradition, personality, or human authority never quietly outranks scripture?

Discussion Topic Four, Christianity Is a Person, Not a Practice, 7 minutes

Question 1, The material we read states plainly, Christianity is not a practice, it is a person, and that Jesus is the earliest church, He is our Christian faith. How does keeping the focus on a relationship with Jesus, rather than a system of practices, change the way someone approaches their daily walk with God?

Question 2, Romans 1:16 says Paul was not ashamed of the gospel because it is the power of God for salvation. Is there an area of your life where you have felt hesitant or ashamed to speak about your faith? What would it look like to move toward Paul's confidence instead?

Question 3, 2 Timothy 2:15 calls us to accurately handle the word of truth. What is one practical habit that helps you handle scripture accurately rather than casually or carelessly?

Follow Up Exercise, 8 minutes
The material we studied tonight offers four practical anchors for staying grounded in truth, start and finish with scripture, look at the spiritual fruit in your life, realize we are all targeted by the enemy, and stay in community with local ministers and believers who will be honest with you.

As a group, go through these four anchors one at a time and have each person share which one they currently feel strongest in and which one they feel weakest in.

Individually, write down one specific action you will take this week to strengthen your weakest anchor. Examples include committing to a consistent time in scripture, asking a trusted friend or mentor to speak honestly into an area of your life, or scheduling an honest conversation with a pastor or small group leader about something you have been avoiding correction on.

Pair up with someone in the group, share your commitment, and agree to check in with each other before the next meeting.

Closing Discussion Question, 2 minutes
John Piper is quoted in the material saying, the real gospel is not a way to get people to heaven, it is the way to get people to God. As we close tonight, how does that distinction change the way you think about your own faith, is it primarily about a destination, or about a relationship with God Himself?

Closing Prayer, 4 minutes
Father, thank You for Your word that never changes, even when the voices around us do. Guard our hearts against distortion, pride, and fear, and root us deeply in a real relationship with Jesus rather than any system, tradition, or trend. Give each person here the courage to accurately handle Your truth and to stay in honest community with those who will speak into our lives. We commit this week's steps to You now. In Jesus' name, Amen.
