Timeless X: Ten Commandments Week 7
SMALL GROUP DISCUSSION GUIDE
You Shall Not Commit Adultery: Building Guardrails That Protect What You Love
based on a sermon preached by Mike Johnson, 10/25/26
Leader Note
This topic can stir up strong feelings. Your group may include married people, singles, divorced people, and some who have been hurt by unfaithfulness or have struggled with it themselves. Make the room safe. Invite honesty, but don't press anyone to share personal details. Remind the group that what is shared stays in the group. Single members can apply these principles to future relationships, to friendships, and to supporting the marriages around them.
Welcome and Opening
Welcome everyone and briefly introduce the topic. The seventh commandment, "You shall not commit adultery" (Exodus 20:14), is about more than one act. It is about the many small choices that either protect or wear down our faithfulness.
Opening Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for bringing us together tonight. Thank You for Your Word, which is a lamp to our feet and a light to our path. As we talk about something so personal and important, give us honest hearts, humble spirits, and open ears. Protect this time from shame and fear, and fill it with Your grace and truth. Help us see where we need guardrails, where we need healing, and where we need to invest more fully in the relationships You have given us. Speak to each of us by Your Holy Spirit. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Scripture Readings
Ask different group members to read these passages aloud.
1. Exodus 20:14 - You shall not commit adultery.
2. Proverbs 5:1-8 - My son, pay attention to my wisdom, incline your ear to my understanding, so that you may maintain discretion, and your lips may comply with knowledge. For the lips of an adulteress drip honey, and her speech is smoother than oil; but in the end she is bitter as wormwood, sharp as a two-edged sword. Her feet go down to death, her steps take hold of Sheol. She does not ponder the path of life; her ways are unstable, she does not know it. Keep your way far from her and do not go near the door of her house.
3. 1 Corinthians 6:18 - Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a person commits are outside the body, but whoever sins sexually, sins against their own body.
4. Genesis 39:12 - So she grabbed him by his garment, saying, "Sleep with me!" But he left his garment in her hand and fled, and went outside.
5. 1 Corinthians 10:12-13 - Therefore let the one who thinks he stands watch out that he does not fall. No temptation has overtaken you except something common to mankind; and God is faithful, so He will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will provide the way of escape also, so that you will be able to endure it.
6. Job 31:1 - I have made a covenant with my eyes.
Icebreaker
Think of a guardrail you've seen on a mountain road or a highway. Why is it placed well before the edge instead of right at it? What would happen if it were placed right at the drop-off?
Discussion Topic 1: One Small Decision at a Time
The sermon pointed out that people who are unfaithful usually never meant for it to happen. It tends to happen one small decision at a time: one conversation, one text message, one innocent lunch that turns into a regular lunch, one relationship that slowly crosses boundaries. Before they realize it, they are somewhere they never meant to be.
Questions
- Why do you think so many people who love Jesus and love their spouse still end up somewhere they never intended to go?
- Proverbs 5 says the lips of an adulteress "drip honey" but "in the end she is bitter as wormwood." How does temptation make itself look sweet while hiding where it leads?
- Proverbs 5:6 says "her ways are unstable, she does not know it." Why are small compromises so hard to notice while we are making them?
- 1 Corinthians 10:12 warns, "let the one who thinks he stands watch out that he does not fall." Why is the attitude "that would never happen to me" so dangerous?
Discussion Topic 2: Stay Far From the Edge
The sermon's main point was that the best way to avoid falling off the edge is to stay far away from it. Protecting what you love doesn't mean trusting yourself to stand strong at the edge of temptation. It means never putting yourself that close to the edge to begin with.
Questions
- Proverbs 5:8 says, "do not go near the door of her house," and 1 Corinthians 6:18 says, "Flee." Why does Scripture tell us to run instead of telling us to resist up close?
- In Genesis 39, Joseph left his garment behind and ran. What did it cost him to flee, and what did it protect?
- 1 Corinthians 10:13 promises that God always provides a way of escape. What are some practical "ways of escape" God gives us in everyday life?
Discussion Topic 3: Guardrails for the Eyes and the Heart
Guardrail 1: Make a covenant with your eyes. Something that starts with a glance will grow into much more if you choose to feed it. There is a difference between noticing and continuing to look. Job didn't say, "I try not to look." He made a binding commitment about what he would let his eyes pursue. The sermon also asked us to be thoughtful about how we dress, because it can cause others to stumble (Matthew 18:7). In the end, though, each of us is responsible for our own choices and can't blame someone else for our fall.
Guardrail 2: Protect your emotional intimacy. Many affairs start emotionally long before they turn physical. Conversations get more personal. Frustrations about your marriage get shared. The other person listens, understands, and sympathizes. You may not have done anything physically wrong, but you are starting to give someone else emotional intimacy that belongs only in your marriage. The "work wife" or "work husband" is one example.
Questions
- Social media, the gym, the coffee shop, driving down the street: where are the hardest places today to keep a covenant with your eyes? What does "the difference between noticing and continuing to look" look like in practice?
- The sermon encouraged us to make a pact with ourselves while our thinking is clear, before temptation shows up. Why does deciding ahead of time work better than deciding in the moment?
- How can we be thoughtful about not causing others to stumble while still taking full responsibility for our own choices?
- Why do you think emotional affairs so often come before physical ones? Why is sharing frustrations about your marriage with someone else especially risky?
- The sermon gave a simple test: If your spouse were in the room, would you share the same things with this person? Would you be comfortable with your spouse reading your text messages from them? Why is secrecy such a reliable warning sign?
Discussion Topic 4: Situations, Touch, and Warning Signs
Guardrail 3: Stay alert to the situations you put yourself in. Examples include regularly riding alone with someone of the opposite sex, private dinners, and one-on-one travel.
Guardrail 4: Be wise about physical touch.
Guardrail 5: Act when you see a warning sign. Warning signs include looking forward to seeing that person, wondering whether they will be there, thinking about how to dress to impress them, loving it when they text you, and starting to compare them to your spouse.
Questions
- Some people might say, "Pastor, you're being ridiculous. I can handle this." The sermon answered, "It's not whether you can handle standing on the edge. The question is why you are choosing to stand there in the first place." How do you respond to that?
- What wise boundaries can people set at work, at church, or in friendships without becoming cold or unkind to others?
- Which warning sign on the list stands out most to you? Why is comparing someone to your spouse so dangerous?
- Once you notice a warning sign, what does "acting" look like? Who could you tell, and what could you change?
Discussion Topic 5: Remember Those You Love, Forgiveness, and Investing in Your Marriage
Guardrail 6: Remember those you love. Adultery isn't just a broken rule. It is a broken promise, a trust that was given and then torn away. For anyone who has been betrayed, the sermon offered hope: forgiveness isn't mainly for the other person, it is for you. It is letting God heal the anger, sorrow, and bitterness so you can be restored. Forgiveness through Christ means you don't have to be defined by what someone else did to you. Forgiveness won't change the hurt of yesterday, but it will begin to change the hold yesterday has on tomorrow.
The last guardrail: Don't just avoid the wrong relationship. Invest in the right one through conversation, dinners, affection, and emotional attachment. Faithfulness isn't only avoiding the wrong person. It is continuing to pursue the person you promised to love.
Questions
- How does picturing the faces of your spouse, children, family, and church change the way you see temptation?
- How is calling adultery a "broken promise" different from calling it a "broken rule"?
- What does it mean that forgiveness is "for you"? How can forgiveness and healthy boundaries exist together?
- What are some simple, practical ways to keep pursuing your spouse? For singles, how can you support and encourage the marriages around you?
Follow-Up Exercise
My Guardrails Commitment
Give each person a few quiet minutes to write answers to these prompts. Over the coming week, they can share their answers with their spouse or a trusted same-gender friend.
- My covenant with my eyes: One specific thing I will stop looking at, scrolling past, or lingering on is .
- My emotional boundary: One relationship or conversation pattern I need to adjust is .
- My situational boundary: One situation I will avoid or change is .
- My accountability: The person I will ask to check in with me is .
- My investment: One thing I will do this week to pursue my spouse, or to encourage a marriage around me, is .
Closing Prayer
Faithful God, thank You that You are a promise-keeping God who never breaks covenant with us. Thank You for Your Word that warns us, protects us, and shows us the way of life. Give us the courage to set guardrails far from the edge. Help us make a covenant with our eyes, guard our hearts, choose our situations wisely, and act quickly when we see warning signs. For anyone here carrying the pain of betrayal, bring Your healing and the freedom of forgiveness. For anyone carrying guilt or shame, remind them that there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. Help us not only avoid the wrong relationships but faithfully pursue the people we have promised to love. Keep us faithful to You and to one another. In Jesus' name, Amen.
