You Shall Not Commit Adultery: Building Guardrails That Protect What You Love
Day 1: One Small Decision at a Time
Opening Prayer
Lord, as I begin this week, open my eyes to see my life honestly. Show me the small choices I often overlook. Give me a teachable heart that listens to Your wisdom. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Scripture Reading
Exodus 20:14, Proverbs 5:1-7, 1 Corinthians 10:12
Daily Topic
Most people who end up in unfaithfulness never planned to be there. Nobody wakes up one morning and decides to destroy their marriage. It happens one small decision at a time: one conversation, one text message, one innocent lunch that becomes a regular lunch, one relationship that slowly crosses boundaries. Proverbs 5 describes temptation as sweet as honey and smooth as oil at first, but bitter as wormwood in the end. It says her ways are unstable, and she doesn't even know it. That is what makes small compromises so dangerous: they rarely feel dangerous while we are making them. Paul warns, "let the one who thinks he stands watch out that he does not fall." The thought "that would never happen to me" isn't strength. It is a blind spot. Today, ask God to show you any small steps you have been taking that lead away from where you want to be.
Life Application Exercise
Take ten quiet minutes to think back over your recent conversations, text messages, online habits, and regular routines. Ask yourself: "Is there any small pattern in my life that, if it kept growing, could lead me somewhere I never meant to go?" Write down whatever comes to mind, even if it seems minor. Pray over it and ask God for wisdom about what to do next.
Closing Prayer
Father, thank You for loving me enough to warn me. Keep me from pride that says I could never fall. Help me take small steps toward You rather than away from You. Guard my heart and my home today. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Day 2: Stay Far From the Edge
Opening Prayer
Lord, You are faithful, and You always provide a way of escape. Give me the wisdom to see it and the courage to take it. Teach me to run from what harms me and toward what honors You. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Scripture Reading
Proverbs 5:8, 1 Corinthians 6:18, Genesis 39:6-12, 1 Corinthians 10:13
Daily Topic
The best way to avoid falling off the edge is to stay far away from it. Scripture doesn't tell us to see how close we can get to temptation without giving in. It says, "Keep your way far from her and do not go near the door of her house," and "Flee from sexual immorality." Joseph lived this out. When Potiphar's wife grabbed him, he didn't stop to argue or test his willpower. He left his garment in her hand and ran. Fleeing cost him something, but it protected his integrity and his relationship with God. The best way to protect what you love isn't to trust yourself to stand strong at the edge. It is to never put yourself that close to the edge to begin with. God promises that no temptation is beyond what He will help you bear, and that He always provides a way out. Often that way out is simply choosing not to go near the door.
Life Application Exercise
Picture a guardrail on a mountain road. It sits well before the edge, not right at it. Now think about your own life. Write down one "door" you need to stop walking near. It could be a place, an app, a website, a relationship, or a time of day when you feel most vulnerable. Then write down one specific "way of escape" you will use when temptation comes, such as leaving the room, putting down the phone, calling a friend, or praying out loud. Commit to it today.
Closing Prayer
Faithful God, thank You for always providing a way out. Like Joseph, give me the courage to flee even when it costs me something. Help me set my guardrails far from the edge. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Day 3: A Covenant With My Eyes
Opening Prayer
Lord, You see everything about me, including what my eyes linger on and what my heart longs for. Purify my sight and my desires. Help me make a binding commitment to honor You with what I look at. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Scripture Reading
Job 31:1, Matthew 5:27-28, Matthew 18:7
Daily Topic
Job said, "I have made a covenant with my eyes." A covenant is more than a casual intention. It is a binding commitment. Job wasn't saying, "I try not to look." He was saying, "I have made a deliberate decision about what I will let my eyes pursue." Temptation meets us everywhere: on social media, at the gym, in the coffee shop, even driving down the street. Something that begins with a glance will grow into much more if you choose to feed it. There is a difference between noticing and continuing to look. Jesus taught that adultery starts in the heart, which means faithfulness starts there too. We are also called to love our brothers and sisters by being thoughtful about how we dress and present ourselves, so that we don't become a stumbling block. In the end, though, each of us is responsible for our own eyes and choices. We can't blame someone else for our fall. The wisest time to make this covenant is now, while your thinking is clear and your emotions aren't pulling you toward the edge.
Life Application Exercise
Write your own covenant with your eyes in one or two sentences, for example: "I commit that when I notice something tempting, I will look away and not look back." Then make one practical change today: unfollow accounts that pull you toward lust, add filters or accountability software to your devices, or change your scrolling habits. Put your written covenant somewhere you will see it every day.
Closing Prayer
Father, I make a covenant with my eyes today. When I notice, help me turn away rather than keep looking. Give me a pure heart, and help me love others well by not causing them to stumble. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Day 4: Guarding the Heart and Watching for Warning Signs
Opening Prayer
Lord, guard my heart, because everything I do flows from it. Show me where I may be giving away what belongs only in my marriage or my future marriage. Help me be honest with myself and with You. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Scripture Reading
Proverbs 4:23-27, Ephesians 5:15-16, 1 Thessalonians 5:22
Daily Topic
Many affairs start emotionally long before they turn physical. You talk, you laugh, you enjoy each other's company. Conversations get more personal. Frustrations about your marriage get shared. The other person listens, understands, and sympathizes. You may not have done anything physically wrong, but you are starting to give someone else emotional intimacy that belongs only in your marriage. Marriage isn't only about physical intimacy. It is about companionship, trust, emotional connection, and sharing life together. That is why it matters to be careful about the situations we put ourselves in, like regularly riding alone with someone of the opposite sex, private dinners, and one-on-one travel, and to be wise about physical touch. The question isn't whether you can handle standing on the edge. It is why you would choose to stand there at all. Watch for the warning signs: looking forward to seeing that person, wondering if they will be there, dressing to impress them, loving it when they text you, and comparing them to your spouse. Secrecy is the first sign that a relationship is becoming something it shouldn't be.
Life Application Exercise
Give your relationships the simple test from the sermon. For each close relationship outside your marriage, ask: "If my spouse were in the room, would I share the same things with this person? Would I be comfortable with my spouse reading our text messages?" Then go through the list of warning signs and be honest about whether any of them describe you right now. If one does, act today. Tell your spouse or a trusted same-gender friend, and take one concrete step to put distance in that relationship. If you are single, consider how these same boundaries can protect your heart and honor God in your friendships and dating relationships.
Closing Prayer
Lord, thank You for warning signs that protect me. Give me the courage to act on them right away instead of ignoring them. Bring every hidden thing into Your light, and keep my heart fully devoted to You and to the person I have promised to love. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Day 5: Remember Those You Love, Forgive, and Pursue
Opening Prayer
Gracious God, You are a covenant-keeping God who never breaks Your promises. Thank You for Your faithfulness to me. Heal what is broken in me, and teach me to love faithfully the way You love. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Scripture Reading
Proverbs 5:15-19, Colossians 3:12-14, Ephesians 4:31-32, Romans 8:1
Daily Topic
Adultery isn't just a broken rule. It is a broken promise, a trust that was given and then torn away. One of the strongest guardrails is to remember the people you love: your spouse, your children, your family, and your church family, all of whom would carry the pain. For those who have been betrayed, there is hope. Forgiveness isn't mainly for the other person. It is for you. It is letting God heal the anger, the sorrow, and the bitterness so you can be restored. Forgiveness through Christ means you don't have to be defined by what someone else did to you. It won't change the hurt of yesterday, but it will begin to change the hold yesterday has on tomorrow. For anyone who has failed, Romans 8:1 reminds us there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. Finally, the best guardrail isn't only avoiding the wrong relationship. It is investing in the right one through conversations, dinners, affection, and emotional connection. Faithfulness isn't simply avoiding the wrong person. It is continuing to pursue the person you promised to love.
Life Application Exercise
Write down the names of the people who would be hurt if you broke faith, and pray for each of them by name. If you are carrying the pain of betrayal, write a simple prayer telling God you are choosing to begin the process of forgiveness, and consider talking with a pastor or Christian counselor. If you are carrying guilt, confess it to God and receive His forgiveness. Then plan one intentional act of pursuit for your spouse this week: a date night, a heartfelt note, an unhurried conversation, or a simple act of affection. If you are single, write a note of encouragement to a married couple you know and commit to praying for them.
Closing Prayer
Faithful Father, thank You for Your covenant love that never fails. Help me remember the people I love when temptation comes. Heal the wounds of betrayal, and free me from bitterness and shame. Teach me not only to avoid the wrong relationship, but to faithfully and joyfully pursue the one You have given me. Keep me faithful to You and to my promises all the days of my life. In Jesus' name, Amen.
