Galatians Chapter 5: Small Group Discussion Guide

Galatians 5 Small Group Discussion Guide: Led by the Spirit

Total time: 60 minutes

Big Idea: Freedom in Christ is not a license to sin, nor is it law-keeping — it's being led by the Holy Spirit.

OPENING PRAYER (5 minutes)
Leader prays aloud, or invite a volunteer:
Father, thank You for the freedom You purchased for us in Christ. We confess that we often want You as Savior but resist You as Lord. Tonight, we don't want rules and we don't want license — we want You. Holy Spirit, lead this conversation. Show us where our flesh is still in charge, give us courage to name it honestly, and grow in us the fruit only You can produce. Make us people who can say with confidence that we are ruled well because You rule us. In Jesus' name, amen.

SCRIPTURE READINGS (10 minutes)
Have different people read each passage aloud, pausing briefly between them.
Reader 1: Galatians 5:1-6 — freedom and the danger of returning to law-keeping.
Reader 2: Galatians 5:13-18 — freedom is not an opportunity for the flesh; walk by the Spirit.
Reader 3: Galatians 5:19-26 — the deeds of the flesh and the fruit of the Spirit.
Reader 4: Romans 7:18-19 — the willing is present, but the doing of the good is not.
Reader 5: 1 John 1:10 — if we say we have not sinned, we make Him a liar.
Reader 6: Matthew 19:3-6 and Genesis 2:24 — Jesus answers a "what's lawful" question by returning to God's original design.

DISCUSSION TOPICS AND QUESTIONS (30 minutes)
Topic 1 — Two ditches: license and legalism (8 minutes)
Paul warns about slipping back under the law and about using freedom as a license for the flesh. Which ditch do you naturally drift toward, and why?
Where have you seen a "crown without a cross" version of Christianity — all the benefits of Jesus with none of the surrender?
What's the practical difference between the Spirit leading us to holiness and the flesh leading us to legalism? How can you tell them apart in your own life?

Topic 2 — Savior or Lord (7 minutes)
Be honest: is there an area of your life where you've accepted Jesus as Savior but quietly kept the steering wheel?
If true freedom is being led by the Spirit rather than doing whatever I want, what does that mean for a decision you're facing this month?
How does the phrase "I know how to rule myself" line up with, or push against, Galatians 5?

Topic 3 — How do I know if it's the Holy Spirit (8 minutes)
Being led by the Spirit isn't mystical. Three tests: biblical alignment, biblical counsel, and biblical peace.
Alignment: does the leading agree with what Scripture actually says, not just what I want it to say? Where have you seen someone confuse a desire with a divine leading?
Counsel: who in this room or in your life has permission to tell you no? If no one does, what does that reveal?
Peace: how do you distinguish the settled peace of God from the relief of simply getting your own way?
Notice how Jesus handles the Pharisees in Matthew 19. They ask what they can get away with; He answers with God's design from the beginning. How would your prayers change if you stopped asking "what's permitted" and started asking "what did God design"?

Topic 4 — The fight is evidence of life (7 minutes)
Romans 7 describes wanting good and doing the opposite. Does that description encourage you or discourage you?
If the battle with sin is proof the Spirit is still leading you and fighting your flesh, how does that reframe a struggle you've been ashamed of?
1 John 1:10 says denying sin makes God a liar. What's the cost of pretending we have it together in a group like this?
Instead of rules, the Spirit gives fruit we need to grow. Read the fruit list again slowly. Which one is most evident in you right now, and which one is most obviously missing?

FOLLOW-UP EXERCISE (10 minutes in group, then one week at home)
Part 1, in the room, 5 minutes. Have everyone write privately: one fruit of the Spirit they are asking God to grow this week, and one specific deed of the flesh from Galatians 5:19-21 they are asking God to put to death. Then write one sentence completing this prompt: I have been treating Jesus as Savior but not Lord in the area of blank.

Part 2, at home, this week. Keep a simple daily log with three lines each night: where did I follow the flesh today, where did I follow the Spirit today, and what did Scripture say about it. Before any significant decision this week, run it through the three tests out loud — alignment, counsel, peace. Bring one story back to the group next time, either a win or a whiff.

CLOSING PRAYER (5 minutes)
Ask two or three people to pray briefly over what was shared, then the leader closes:
Lord Jesus, You are not just our rescuer, You are our King. We give You the steering wheel tonight, including the places we've been holding back. Holy Spirit, we don't want a crown without a cross, and we don't want rules without relationship. Produce Your fruit in us, kill what needs to die, and keep us fighting, because the fight itself is proof You haven't left us. Give us the humility to seek counsel, the discipline to test everything against Your word, and the peace that only comes from walking in step with You. We'll be back next week with our stories. Until then, lead us. In Jesus' name, amen.
