Daily Devo: Timeless X I Am Who I Am

FIVE DAY DAILY DEVOTIONAL
Based on a sermon preached by Mike Johnson, 9/13/26

NO OTHER GODS
Each day takes about fifteen to twenty minutes. Keep a notebook nearby and do the exercise the same day you read it.

DAY ONE
Opening prayer
Father, before I ask you for anything, let me see you for who you are. You are not a bigger version of me. You are the I AM, uncreated and unsustained, the reason anything exists at all. Quiet me. Make me small in the right way and secure in the right way. In Jesus' name, amen.

Scripture reading
Exodus 3:13-15, then Exodus 20:1-3.

Today's topic: God simply is
God tells Moses to say I AM has sent you. There is a word for what that name means. Aseity (A-see-it-y). God simply is. He depends on nothing outside himself for his existence. Nothing created him. Nothing sustains him. He depends on nothing, and everything depends on him. Tozer said it plainly: God is the original existence, and because God is, everything else that is, is.
Sit with the second half of that. Everything depends on him. Your heartbeat this morning. The job you are worried about. The person whose approval you are chasing. The money in your account. All of it is downstream of him. Which means when God says you shall have no other gods before me, he is not being insecure. He is telling you the truth about reality. There is nothing else in the entire created order that can occupy that position without collapsing under the weight.

Life application exercise
Write the sentence God depends on nothing and everything depends on him at the top of a page. Under it, list the five things you thought about most in the last twenty-four hours. Beside each one, write the words depends on God. Then answer in writing: if every single one of these depends on God, why am I treating any of them as if it is the foundation? Carry the sentence with you today, say it out loud once at midday.

Closing prayer
I AM, you are the ground under everything I touched today. Forgive me for living as if you were optional and my circumstances were essential. Teach me to see reality the way it actually is. Amen.

DAY TWO
Opening prayer
Lord, I have been asking Pharaoh's question in a quieter voice. Who are you that I should obey your voice? Answer me today, not to shame me, but to free me. Amen.

Scripture reading
Exodus 5:1-2, then Exodus 7:1-5 or skim the plague narrative headings in Exodus chapters 7 through 12.

Today's topic: God's question to Egypt is God's question to you
Egypt was crystal clear about what it depended on. The Nile. Animals. Health. Crops. The sun. Pharaoh. Pharaoh looked at Moses and asked who is the LORD that I should obey his voice, and the God who depends on nothing answered by going straight down the list. The Nile failed. The land failed. The gods failed. Pharaoh failed. Egypt failed. God did not fail.
Behind all of it is God's question: why are you depending on things when those things depend on me? That is not a taunt. It is mercy. God dismantled Egypt's false supports in public so that a nation of slaves could walk out free and know exactly who had carried them.

Life application exercise
Make your own Egypt list. Write down, honestly, the five or six things you are currently counting on to make your life work. Do not write the spiritual answer. Write the real one: money, health, marriage, work, reputation, control, a particular person, a particular outcome. Now beside each one, write one time it has already let you down or shown its limits. Then answer this in writing: what would God have to touch in my life for me to find out what I am really leaning on?

Closing prayer
Father, I do not want to learn this the hard way. Thank you for showing me Egypt so I would recognize my own. Everything on my list came from your hand and none of it can replace your hand. Amen.

DAY THREE
Opening prayer
God, you gave me good gifts and I have been asking them to be God. I am sorry. Show me the difference today between gratitude and idolatry in my own heart. Amen.

Scripture reading
Jeremiah 2:11-13, then James 1:17.

Today's topic: God's gifts make wonderful gifts and terrible gods
This is the sharpest line from the sermon. God's gifts make wonderful gifts. They make terrible gods. Money, health, marriage, work, reputation, control, none of these are evil. Most of them are blessings. The problem begins the moment you hand one of them the weight of your entire life. Jeremiah calls it trading a fountain of living water for cracked cisterns that cannot hold water. The tragedy is not that the cistern is bad. It is that it leaks, and you built your thirst around it.
Here is a practical diagnostic. Look at what you cannot imagine being okay without. Look at what determines your mood. Look at what you protect at the cost of obedience. That is where the weight is resting. And abundant life is found only in living in dependence on the one who created us, not on the gifts he hands us along the way.

Life application exercise
Choose the one item from yesterday's list with the strongest grip. Write this sentence and fill in the blank: I have started believing that I cannot be okay unless this is okay. Then write two short paragraphs. First, thank God specifically for this thing as a gift, naming what is genuinely good about it. Second, release it out loud as a god, saying plainly that it was never meant to carry your life. Then do one concrete act today that loosens the grip: give some of the money away, take the day off you have been refusing to take, say the honest thing that risks the approval, hand off the thing you have been controlling.

Closing prayer
Jesus, you are the fountain and everything else is a cistern. Thank you for good gifts. Keep me from asking them to be you. Where I have already cracked and leaked, come and fill me. Amen.

DAY FOUR
Opening prayer
Holy Spirit, I have made promises to myself that I could not keep. I am done trying to white knuckle my heart into loving the right things. Do in me what I cannot do in myself. Amen.

Scripture reading
Philippians 2:12-13, then Ezekiel 36:26-27.

Today's topic: You cannot command your heart to stop wanting
Here is how the usual attempt goes. I depend too much on people's approval, so I am going to stop worrying about what other people think. I depend too much on money for my security, so I am going to trust God to provide from now on. Both are sincere and both fail, because you cannot simply command your heart to stop wanting what it wants. Resolve manages behavior for a while. It does not change desire.
Philippians 2:13 is the way out. God is working in you, giving you the desire and the power to do what pleases him. Not just the power, the desire. He gets under the waterline and changes what you want. Ezekiel promises the same thing, a heart of stone traded for a heart of flesh. Your part is not to manufacture new desires. Your part is to stop pretending you can, and to ask the only one who can.

Life application exercise
Write down one resolution you have made about your idol that did not last. Under it write why it failed. Then pray the Ask prayer in writing, in your own handwriting, slowly: Holy Spirit, I cannot change this in myself. Would you change me? Renew my mind. Change what I believe. Change what I desire. Help me see this thing for what it is. Maybe it is a wonderful gift from you, but it was never meant to replace you. Then set a reminder on your phone for midday and evening today that says show me and change me, and pray it both times.

Closing prayer
Father, thank you that you are not standing over me demanding that I generate a new heart. You are working in me, giving both the desire and the power. I am trusting that, not my willpower. Amen.
DAY FIVE
Opening prayer
Lord, greater is he who is in me than he who is in the world. I want to believe that today, especially about the thing that has had such a grip on me. Strengthen my faith. Amen.

Scripture reading
1 John 4:4, then Exodus 20:1-3 one more time.

Today's topic: Acknowledge, ask, believe, and keep going
Three words carry this forward. Acknowledge: God, I can see that I am depending on this, and I have started believing that I cannot be okay unless this is okay. Ask: Holy Spirit, I cannot change this in myself, would you change me. Believe: greater is he who is in you than he who is in the world.
And understand this clearly. It will take time. You will fail this week. When you do, the prayer is not a new resolution, it is the same three steps again: Holy Spirit, I did it again. I put too much weight on this. I am acknowledging it. I am asking you to change me. I believe you are greater than this thing that has such a grip on my heart.
Remember why the command exists at all. When God says you shall have no other gods before me, it is not because he wants to keep something good from you. It is because he does not want you placing the weight of your life on something that cannot carry it. He said remember what I did and remember who I am. In the end all those things failed, but I did not.

Life application exercise
Write the daily prayer on a card and put it where you will see it every morning for the next thirty days: God, show me what I am depending on besides you, and begin to change that desire within me. On the back write acknowledge, ask, believe. Then do three things today. One, look back over this week and write the single clearest thing God showed you. Two, tell one trusted person about it out loud, today, and ask them to check on you in two weeks. Three, write the closing sentence in your own hand and sign it: I AM that I AM is all that I need.

Closing prayer
I AM, you did not fail Egypt's slaves and you will not fail me. Thank you that this command is your great love, protecting me from crushing my life under things that were never built to hold it. Keep showing me what I lean on. Keep changing what I want. You are greater than anything that has a grip on my heart, and you are all that I need. Amen.
