Daily Devo: Timeless X Do Not Take the Name of the Lord in Vain

5 DAY DAILY DEVOTIONAL
10 Commandments: The 3rd Commandment
Taking the Lord's Name in Vain
Based on a sermon preached by Greg Ballog, 9/27/26

Big Idea: Carrying God's name means representing Him truthfully with our whole lives.

DAY 1: WORSHIPPING WITH AN ENGAGED HEART
Opening Prayer
Father, You are great and most worthy of praise. Wake up my heart today so that my worship is full, not empty. Amen.

Scripture Reading
Exodus 20:1-2, 7 and Psalm 96:1-4

Daily Topic
Before God gave a single command, He reminded His people who He was: "I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the place of slavery." Obedience flows from rescue. The Third Commandment tells us not to take God's name in vain. The Hebrew words mean not to lift, carry, or bear His name emptily or falsely. One of the most common ways we do this is by worshipping with a disengaged heart. We sing the words while our minds are somewhere else. Psalm 96 calls us to sing a new song and proclaim His salvation day after day. Worship isn't only a Sunday event. It is the response of a rescued heart every day.

Life Application Follow Up Exercise
Write down three specific things God has rescued you from or brought you through. Then read Psalm 96:1-4 out loud slowly, as your own words of praise. Before worship this Sunday, spend two minutes quietly asking God to help you fully engage.

Closing Prayer
Lord, You brought me out of slavery into freedom. Let my worship be real, whole-hearted, and daily. May I never carry Your name with an empty heart. Amen.

DAY 2: NOT OF THIS WORLD
Opening Prayer
God, renew my mind today. Show me where I've let the world shape me more than Your Word has. Amen.

Scripture Reading
John 17:14 and Romans 12:2

Daily Topic
Jesus prayed that His followers would be in the world but not of it. One way we carry God's name falsely is by linking it with worldly things. We attach His name to attitudes, ambitions, or agendas that don't reflect His heart. Romans 12:2 calls us not to conform to the pattern of this world but to be transformed by the renewing of our minds. The message said it this way: "God's deliverance got them out of Egypt, but it was only their surrender to God that got Egypt out of them." Salvation brings us out. Surrender changes what is still in us.

Life Application Follow Up Exercise
Think about your media, conversations, spending, and social media posts from the past week. Where has the world's pattern shaped you most? Pick one area and choose one change for the rest of this week, like replacing 15 minutes of scrolling with Scripture or prayer.

Closing Prayer
Father, get the "Egypt" out of me. Transform my mind so that my life shows the difference You make. Keep me from attaching Your name to anything that doesn't honor You. Amen.

DAY 3: CARRYING HIS NAME THROUGH LOVE
Opening Prayer
Lord Jesus, You loved me when I was far from You. Fill me with that same love for the people around me today. Amen.

Scripture Reading
John 13:34-35 and 1 John 4:19-21

Daily Topic
How we love all people is one of the clearest ways we carry God's name. Jesus said the world would know we are His disciples by our love. When Christians are harsh, dismissive, or selective with love, it makes God's name look empty to the watching world. Obedience isn't legalism. It is a symptom of salvation. When we understand how much we've been loved, loving others becomes an "I get to" and not an "I have to."

Life Application Follow Up Exercise
Name one person who is hard for you to love. It might be a coworker, family member, neighbor, or someone with very different views. Pray for them by name today. Then do one kind, specific thing for them this week, like a note, a text, a meal, or a word of encouragement.

Closing Prayer
God, let my love be a true reflection of Your name. Help me love the people who are easy to love and the people who are hard to love. Amen.

DAY 4: THE FIELDS ARE READY
Opening Prayer
Father, open my eyes to the people around me who need to know You. Give me courage and compassion today. Amen.

Scripture Reading
John 4:33-35 and Matthew 28:19

Daily Topic
Jesus told His disciples not to say "four more months, and then comes the harvest." He told them to open their eyes because the fields were ready now. Hesitating to share the Gospel is another way we carry God's name emptily. We bear His name, but we keep it to ourselves. In Matthew 28:19, we are sent to make disciples and baptize them in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. We carry His name so we can bring it to others. Fear, busyness, and waiting for the "perfect moment" can keep us quiet. But the harvest is ready today.

Life Application Follow Up Exercise
Write down the names of three people in your life who don't yet follow Jesus. Pray for each of them by name every day this week. Ask God for one open door to invite one of them to church or to share a short part of your story of what God has done for you.

Closing Prayer
Lord, forgive me for saying "later" when You say "now." Make me bold, loving, and ready. Use me to bring Your name to someone who needs it. Amen.

DAY 5: REMEMBER WHO YOU ARE AND WHOSE YOU ARE
Opening Prayer
God, Your Word is life. Plant it deep in me so that my lips and my life tell the same story. Amen.

Scripture Reading
Joshua 1:8, Titus 1:10, 16, and Philippians 2:9-11

Daily Topic
It's hard to represent someone you don't really know. Not knowing God's Word leaves us carrying His name without understanding His character. Joshua was told to meditate on God's instruction day and night. Titus warns about people who claim to know God but deny Him by their works. As the message said, "Lips that praise God's name combined with a lifestyle that denies Him creates confusion to a lost world." Jesus has been given the name above every name, and one day every knee will bow. Until then, we get to carry that name faithfully. So how are you holding Jesus' name? Remember who you are and whose you are.

Life Application Follow Up Exercise
Choose one verse from this week's readings and memorize it. Philippians 2:9-10 or Joshua 1:8 are good options. Write it on a card and read it every morning. Then look back over the week and ask yourself, "Where do my words and my actions still not match?" Write one commitment to close that gap, and share it with a friend or your small group.

Closing Prayer
Father, thank You for the privilege of carrying Your name. Fill me with Your Word, align my life with my lips, and help me hold the name of Jesus with honor. Remind me every day who I am and whose I am. In the name above every name, Jesus Christ, Amen.
