Daily Devo: Psalm 147
5 Day Devotion based on a sermon preached by Tim Bach, 7/19/26
Day 1 – The privilege of praise
Opening prayer
Lord, thank You for the gift of this new day and for the privilege of coming into Your presence. Teach me to see praise not as a chore but as a joy and an honor. Open my heart to recognize Your goodness as I reflect on Your Word today. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Scripture reading
Read Psalm 147:1–3
Daily topic
Today’s focus is on the privilege of praising God. Psalm 147 reminds us that praising the Lord is “fitting,” meaning it is right, beautiful, and appropriate for God’s people. When we praise Him, we align our hearts with truth about who He is and what He has done. Praise is not about pretending everything is fine; it is about lifting our eyes to the One who is always faithful.
Life application follow up exercise
Take five minutes to write down three specific reasons you can praise God today. They might be related to His character (for example, His faithfulness, love, or wisdom) or His work in your life recently. After writing them, speak them out loud as a simple prayer of praise. If you can, turn on a worship song that reminds you of one of these truths and sing or quietly reflect as an act of praise.
Closing prayer
Lord, I praise You today for who You are and for all You have done. Help me to remember that it is a privilege to worship You and that You are worthy of praise in every season. When I am tempted to focus only on my problems, lift my eyes to see Your greatness and goodness. Keep my heart soft and my mouth ready to bless Your name. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Day 2 – Remembering God’s faithfulness
Opening prayer
Father, thank You for walking with me through every season of life. Today, help me remember the ways You have been faithful in the past so that I can trust You more in the present. Bring to mind specific moments where You have shown Your goodness, and use them to strengthen my faith. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Scripture reading
Read Psalm 147:4–6
Daily topic
Today’s focus is on remembering God’s faithfulness. The psalm points to a God who not only numbers the stars but also heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds. The same God who rules the universe also sees our pain and steps into our stories. Remembering His past faithfulness keeps us from being overwhelmed by today’s fears.[4]
Life application follow up exercise
Set aside some quiet time to think back over the last year. Write out a short “faithfulness timeline,” listing at least five moments where you can see God’s hand—times He provided, guided, protected, convicted, or comforted you. Next to each moment, write one sentence of gratitude. If possible, share one of these stories with a friend, family member, or someone in your church this week as a way of encouraging them and giving glory to God.
Closing prayer
Lord, thank You for the specific ways You have been faithful in my life. I confess that I often forget Your past goodness and focus only on what feels overwhelming right now. Re-center my heart on Your proven character, and let remembered faithfulness become fuel for present trust. Give me boldness to share my story so others can see how good You are. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Day 3 – God’s care for the big and the small
Opening prayer
God, You are both mighty and near. Today, help me see how You care for both the big things in my life and the small details I often overlook. Open my eyes to recognize Your hand in places I might normally miss. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Scripture reading
Read Psalm 147:7–11
Daily topic
Today’s focus is on God’s care for both the big and small areas of our lives. Psalm 147 shows a God who governs creation and yet delights in those who fear Him and put their hope in His unfailing love. He is not distant or detached; He is deeply involved. Trusting Him means bringing everything to Him—major decisions, heavy burdens, and even small anxieties.
Life application follow up exercise
Make two columns on a page. Label the first “Big things” and the second “Small things.” Under “Big things,” list major concerns (such as health, family, finances, calling, or ministry). Under “Small things,” list daily details or minor worries (such as schedule, small conflicts, household needs, or tasks that feel stressful). Pray through each list, inviting God into both categories. As you go through your day, when a small worry arises, pause and say, “Lord, You care about this too, and I entrust it to You.”
Closing prayer
Lord, thank You that nothing in my life is too big for Your power or too small for Your attention. Teach me to bring everything to You in prayer, trusting that You delight in those who hope in Your love. Calm my anxious thoughts and remind me that You are present in every detail. Help me to rest today in Your wise and tender care. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Day 4 – Praise in the middle of struggle
Opening prayer
Jesus, You see the struggles and burdens I carry today. I bring them honestly before You and ask that, even in the middle of them, You would teach me the power of praise. Help me not to deny my pain, but to encounter You in it. In Your name I pray, amen.
Scripture reading
Read Psalm 147:12–14.
Daily topic
Today’s focus is on learning to praise God even in seasons of difficulty. In Psalm 147, God’s people are called to praise Him as He strengthens their gates and blesses their people, often after times of hardship. Praise in struggle does not mean pretending everything is okay; it is choosing to trust God’s character when we cannot yet see how everything will work out. That kind of praise becomes an act of faith and surrender.
Life application follow up exercise
Identify one specific struggle you are facing right now. Write it down honestly, including what feels hard, frustrating, or confusing. Underneath, write three truths about God that are still real in the middle of this struggle (for example, “God is with me,” “God is wise,” “God is my provider,” or “God loves me”). Turn those three truths into a short prayer of praise, even if your emotions have not caught up yet. If helpful, return to this written prayer each day for the rest of the week.
Closing prayer
Lord, You know my situation and every detail of my struggle. I choose today to praise You not because everything is easy, but because You are worthy and You do not change. Strengthen my heart where I am weak and give me the grace to trust You one step at a time. Use this season to deepen my faith and dependence on You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Day 5 – Living a life of praise
Opening prayer
Father, as I come to this final day of this devotional, I ask that You would take what I have learned and work it deep into my heart. Do not let these truths stay on the surface; shape my daily life so that I become a person marked by remembrance and praise. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Scripture reading
Read Psalm 147:15–20.
Daily topic
Today’s focus is on living a lifestyle of praise and remembrance, not just having occasional moments of worship. The psalm closes by highlighting God’s powerful Word and His unique relationship with His people. Praise becomes a rhythm of life when we consistently remember His works, rehearse His promises, and respond to His Word. A life of praise points others to Him and keeps our hearts anchored in truth.
Life application follow up exercise
Look back over the week and briefly summarize in your own words what God has shown you about praise and remembering. Then, choose one concrete rhythm you will adopt for the next month to help you live this out—a weekly gratitude list, a daily “praise walk,” a reminder on your phone to pause and thank God, or a commitment to share one testimony each week with someone. Write down specifically what you will do, when you will do it, and how you will remind yourself. Ask a trusted friend or group member to check in with you in a week or two about how it is going.
Closing prayer
Lord, thank You for walking with me through these days of reflection in Psalm 147 and its themes of remembrance and praise. Seal in my heart the truths You have highlighted and give me the desire and discipline to build rhythms that keep me close to You. Let my life become a steady testimony of Your faithfulness, both in what I say and how I live. Use me to encourage others to remember and praise Your name. In Jesus’ name, amen.
